Have Macular Degeneration? At Eigenbrodt Vision Center, we may prescribe specially formulated eye vitamins to patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). According to the National Eye Institute, the results of the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) clearly show that people who should consider taking the combination of antioxidants plus zinc include those who are at risk for developing advanced Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
The patients at risk are defined as:
- Having either intermediate AMD in one or both eyes (many medium-sized drusen or one or more large drusen)
OR
- Advanced AMD in one eye, but not the other eye (a breakdown of light-sensitive cells and supporting tissue in the central retinal area)
OR
- The development of abnormal and fragile blood vessels under the retina (wet form) that can either leak fluid or blood
